STUDIO
My studio (or rather shop as I affectionately call it) is located in the Northern Michigan town of Traverse City. This location is perfect for the outdoor activities that I enjoy and has proven to be the inspiration behind my furniture. In a time when so many items are mass produced by machinery and lose their intimacy I rely on simple time tested techniques and basic tools to make furniture.
Machinery
Many of my machines are vintage, still in their prime and able to produce consistent results after being in use for 40 or 50 years. The saying "they don't make them like they used to" rings true for many of these oldies. It's nice to know I can rely on these old machines, especially when I'm cutting a precious piece of wood.
Hand Tools
One of the many things that sets my furniture apart from others is my careful use of hand tools. Hand saws, chisels, hand planes and knives are used to cut, shape and smooth wood to exacting standards. These standards make for better fitting joinery and therefore longer lasting furniture. The hand tools are also used for detail work, evident when taking that closer look. Many of the tools I make because they are specific to the work I do. Making a wooden hand plane is a rewarding task, especially when that first shaving rolls off in a beautiful curl and you can see right through it.
Finishing
To allow wood to truly show it's beauty, the final step of finishing must be done with thought and care. The beauty of wood not only lies in look, but also in how it feels to the hand. A natural hand rubbed oil finish or fine shellac compliments the work that has been done to make a beautiful piece of furniture. These finishes allow the true depth of the wood to show and feel silky smooth. They are also very repairable compared to commercial finishes. When use dictates I use a more durable finish, such as in a dining table top for a family with children or kitchen cabinetry.
